How the Grade Calculator Works

  1. 1Choose Grade Average to compute your current grade, or Final Exam Needed to find the score required on your final.
  2. 2In Grade Average mode: enter each assignment, score, and weight from your syllabus.
  3. 3In Final Exam mode: enter your current grade, the final exam's weight percentage, and your target grade.
  4. 4See your result instantly with letter grade and whether it is achievable.

Weighted vs. Simple Average

A simple average treats every assignment equally. A weighted average gives more important assignments more influence over your final grade. Most courses use weighted categories: for example, homework 20%, midterm 35%, final 45%. A simple average of those three scores would be misleading — the weighted average gives you the accurate picture.

Tips for Managing Your Grades

Read your syllabus weights

Enter the exact category weights from your syllabus. Misremembering a weight by 10% can make your calculated grade significantly wrong.

Track early and often

Calculate your running grade after each major assignment. Catching a problem in week 6 is far easier to fix than in week 14.

Find your final exam target early

Use the Final Exam Needed tab before the exam period begins. Knowing you need a 72 instead of a 95 reduces stress and lets you study proportionately.

Check if weights sum to 100%

If your weights total more or less than 100%, check your syllabus again. Some courses have participation, attendance, or extra credit that adds up.

Combine with GPA planning

Use this tool alongside the GPA Calculator to see how your target course grade will affect your semester and cumulative GPA.

Extra credit math

If you need over 100% on your final, estimate what extra credit could realistically add. Even 3–5 extra credit points can shift the required final score by 10+ points.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade average?

Multiply each assignment score by its weight percentage, sum those products, then divide by the total weight. For example: Homework 88% × 20% weight = 17.6; Midterm 76% × 35% = 26.6; Project 92% × 45% = 41.4. Total = 85.6%. The Grade Average tab handles this automatically.

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

The formula is: needed = (target − current × (1 − finalWeight)) ÷ finalWeight. For example, if you have an 82% and the final is worth 30% and you want a 90%: (90 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 108.7%. In this case you would need extra credit. Use the "Final Exam Needed" tab to calculate this instantly.

What if my weights do not add up to 100%?

The calculator computes a weighted average based on the weights you entered. If weights sum to less than 100%, the result reflects only the graded portion of your course so far — useful for tracking midterm progress. A warning appears when weights do not sum to 100%.

What letter grade corresponds to each percentage?

Standard US scale: 93–100 = A, 90–92 = A−, 87–89 = B+, 83–86 = B, 80–82 = B−, 77–79 = C+, 73–76 = C, 70–72 = C−, 67–69 = D+, 63–66 = D, 60–62 = D−, below 60 = F. Your institution may use a different scale.

Can I use this for college courses?

Yes. Enter each graded category (homework, quizzes, midterm, final, lab, participation) with its weight from your syllabus. The weighted average tab shows your current standing in the course at any point in the semester.

What if I need more than 100% on my final?

If the calculator shows you need over 100%, the target grade is not achievable through the final exam alone given your current grade and the exam weight. Some courses offer extra credit — consult your instructor. Otherwise, focus on what grade is realistically achievable.
