  4. 4Optionally enter your previous GPA and credits to compute cumulative GPA.

GPA Scale Reference

The standard US GPA scale assigns quality points to each letter grade, multiplied by credit hours to produce quality points. An A in a 3-credit course contributes 4.0 × 3 = 12 quality points to your GPA calculation. Weighted scales add a bonus on top: a B+ in an AP course earns 3.3 + 1.0 = 4.3 grade points per credit hour.

GPA Tips for Students

Credit hours matter

A B in a 4-credit science course pulls your GPA more than an A in a 1-credit elective. Focus effort on high-credit core courses.

AP and honors have limits

Weighted GPA is calculated by your high school, but many colleges recalculate on an unweighted scale. Know which scale each school uses.

Grade replacement policies

Many schools allow you to retake a course and replace the old grade. Check whether your school averages both attempts or takes the higher grade.

Use the cumulative section

Enter your current cumulative GPA and earned credits to see the exact impact of this semester on your overall standing.

Know your honors threshold

Most universities require a 3.5 for Cum Laude, 3.7 for Magna Cum Laude, and 3.9+ for Summa Cum Laude — plan accordingly.

Withdrawals vs. failures

A W (withdrawal) typically does not affect GPA but does affect completion rate. An F drops your GPA significantly — withdraw early if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?

GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing those products, then dividing by the total credit hours. For example: A (4.0) × 3 credits = 12 quality points. If your total quality points are 48 across 16 credit hours, your GPA is 48 ÷ 16 = 3.0.

What is the grade point value for each letter grade?

On the standard 4.0 scale: A/A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, F = 0.0. Some schools do not award A+ above 4.0.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale for all courses. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for more rigorous courses: typically +0.5 for honors courses and +1.0 for AP (Advanced Placement) or IB courses, resulting in a scale up to 5.0. College admissions offices often recalculate GPA on their own scale, so check each school's policy.

How do I calculate cumulative GPA?

Cumulative GPA combines your previous earned credits with the current semester. Enter your previous GPA and total earned credits in the Cumulative GPA section — the calculator adds your new quality points to the historical total and divides by combined credits.

What GPA do I need to graduate with honors?

Honor thresholds vary by institution. Common benchmarks: Cum Laude 3.5+, Magna Cum Laude 3.7+, Summa Cum Laude 3.9+. Some schools use class rank percentiles instead. Check your institution's catalog for exact requirements.

Do all classes count toward GPA?

Most courses count, but pass/fail courses, audit enrollments, and transfer credits may be excluded depending on your institution. Repeated courses may replace or average the old grade depending on school policy.

Is this GPA calculator accurate for my school?

This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale and the most common weighted bonus values (+0.5 honors, +1.0 AP). Some schools use different scales or bonus values. Always verify final GPA with your registrar.
