How to Merge PDFs

  1. 1Click the drop zone or drag your PDF files onto it. You can add multiple files at once. Each file is read locally — nothing is sent to a server.
  2. 2Your files appear in a list showing the file name, page count, and file size. Use the and buttons to reorder them — the merged PDF follows this order exactly.
  3. 3Add more files at any time by clicking the drop zone again. Remove unwanted files with the button next to each entry.
  4. 4Once you have at least two files, click Merge PDFs. The tool combines all pages in order into a single PDF, entirely inside your browser.
  5. 5A download link appears. Click it to save merged.pdf to your device. Use Clear all to start over with a fresh set of files.

Why Merge PDFs in the Browser?

Traditional PDF merge tools upload your files to a remote server, which raises privacy concerns for documents containing personal data, contracts, or confidential information. This tool processes everything locally: the pdf-lib library runs entirely in JavaScript, so your files never leave your device. There are no accounts to create, no email required, and no waiting for a server to respond.

Browser-based merging is also faster for smaller files because there is no network round-trip. The merged PDF is generated in memory and made available as an immediate download — typically in under a second for documents under 20 MB combined.

Tips for Merging PDFs

Add All Files First

Load all your PDFs before reordering. You can add files in multiple batches — just click the drop zone again — and rearrange them freely before clicking Merge.

Check Page Counts

The list shows each file's page count and size. Use this to verify you have the right version of each document and to confirm the merged total before downloading.

Order Matters

Pages appear in the merged PDF in exactly the order shown. Put the cover or title page at the top of the list. Use the arrow buttons — or remove and re-add files — to get the sequence right.

Remove Unwanted Files

Use the ✕ button to remove a file if you change your mind. You do not need to start over — just remove the specific file and merge the rest.

Unlock Before Merging

If any source PDF is password-protected, remove the password first with a PDF unlock tool. Encrypted files that block copying will cause the merge to fail.

Rename After Downloading

The output file is always called merged.pdf. Rename it immediately after downloading so you can identify it later — especially if you are merging several different document sets in one session.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many PDF files can I merge at once?

There is no hard limit on the number of files. You can add as many PDFs as you need — they all load and merge entirely in your browser. In practice, performance depends on your device's RAM. Merging dozens of files or very large PDFs (100 MB+ each) will take longer on low-memory devices, but there is no server-side cap.

Is my PDF sent to a server?

No. All merging happens locally inside your browser using the pdf-lib JavaScript library. Your files are never uploaded, stored, or transmitted anywhere. The tool works the same if you disconnect from the internet after the page loads — processing is entirely client-side.

Can I change the order of the pages before merging?

Yes. After adding your files, each one appears in a list with up and down arrow buttons. Reorder them as needed — the merged PDF will follow the order shown on screen, with all pages from the first file appearing before all pages from the second, and so on.

Can I merge password-protected PDFs?

The tool attempts to open encrypted files, but cannot merge PDFs that are locked with an owner password that prevents content copying. If a PDF is password-protected, remove the password first using a PDF password tool, then merge the unlocked files.

Will the merged PDF look exactly like the originals?

Yes. The tool copies pages from each source PDF without re-rendering, compressing, or altering the content. Fonts, images, vector graphics, form fields, and annotations are preserved as-is. The output PDF is structurally equivalent to manually combining the source pages.

What happens to bookmarks and hyperlinks?

Page content including internal links is preserved. Document-level bookmarks (outlines) from the source PDFs are not automatically merged into a combined table of contents in this version — the individual page links still work, but the bookmark tree from each source file is not inherited by the merged output.

What is the maximum file size for each PDF?

There is no enforced size limit because files never leave your device. Very large PDFs — 200 MB or more — may take a few seconds to load and process depending on your browser and available memory. Most PDFs encountered in everyday use (reports, invoices, forms, presentations) will load and merge in under a second.

Can I merge PDFs on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works in modern mobile browsers such as Chrome for Android and Safari on iOS. On mobile, use the "Click or drag PDFs here" area to open your device's file picker. Performance on mobile may be slower for very large documents due to limited RAM.
