When to Use a Mind Map

Mind maps work best when you are exploring a topic that has multiple dimensions or want to see connections visually. Use them for essay planning (central thesis → main arguments → supporting evidence), revision (subject → topics → subtopics → key facts), brainstorming (problem → possible causes → solutions), and project planning (goal → phases → tasks).

Tips for Effective Mind Mapping

Start with a single word

Your central topic should be one word or a very short phrase. If you need a full sentence, the topic is too narrow to branch productively.

Use single words per node

Branch nodes work best as single keywords or short phrases. Long descriptions kill the visual clarity that makes mind maps useful — move detail into notes elsewhere.

Build breadth before depth

Add all your first-level branches before drilling into second-level detail. This gives you a complete overview of the topic before you commit to any one branch.

Screenshot as you go

Take a screenshot of the map at each major stage of development. This creates a visual history of your thinking and lets you backtrack if a branch dead-ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I edit a node label?

Double-click any node circle to enter edit mode. Type the new label and press Enter or click elsewhere to save.

How do I add a child branch?

Click the green + button that appears next to any node. A new child node is added and auto-positioned in the radial layout.

How do I delete a node?

Click the red × button next to any node (except the root). The node and all its children are removed.

Is my mind map saved?

The current version does not persist between sessions. If you want to keep a mind map, take a screenshot before closing the tab. Saved persistence is on the roadmap.

How many branches can I add?

There is no hard limit, but the auto-layout works best with 3–6 first-level branches and 2–4 children per branch. Very large maps may overlap nodes.

What is a mind map used for?

Mind maps are used for brainstorming ideas, planning essays, taking notes on a topic, studying relationships between concepts, and breaking down complex subjects into manageable subtopics.
