Common Crop Ratios and Their Uses
1:1 (square) is the standard format for Instagram posts and profile pictures. 16:9 is the standard widescreen ratio for YouTube thumbnails, presentations, and desktop wallpapers. 4:3 is the classic photo and older screen format. 9:16 is portrait orientation for Instagram Stories, TikTok, and Reels. 3:2 is the standard DSLR camera ratio and works well for print at standard photo sizes.
Image Cropping Tips
Rule of Thirds
Position the main subject at one of the four intersection points of a 3×3 grid over the image. This creates a more dynamic, visually interesting composition than centering.
Profile Photo Crops
For profile photos, use 1:1 (square) and position the crop so the face occupies the upper two-thirds of the frame. Leave room above the head.
Social Media Formats
YouTube thumbnails need 16:9. Instagram feed posts need 1:1. Instagram Stories and TikTok need 9:16. Use the preset buttons to quickly switch between these.
Preserving Transparency
If you need to crop a PNG with transparency (logos, icons), select PNG as the output format. JPEG converts transparency to white.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. Cropping happens entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your image is never sent to any server.
What aspect ratio presets are available?
The tool includes Free (no constraint), 1:1 (square), 4:3 (standard photo/screen), 16:9 (widescreen), 3:2 (DSLR standard), and 9:16 (portrait/mobile). Select Free to drag a crop box of any shape.
How precise is the crop?
The crop position and size are defined as percentages of the original image dimensions, then converted to exact pixel coordinates for the canvas crop. The output reflects the precise pixel-level crop from the original image.
Can I crop a transparent PNG and keep transparency?
Yes. Select PNG as the output format. JPEG does not support transparency and will replace transparent areas with white. WebP supports transparency and is a good modern alternative to PNG.
What is the maximum image size?
The tool works with any image your browser can load. Very large images (20+ megapixels) may be slow to process due to Canvas API memory limits, but the tool will handle most common photo sizes without issue.
