How the Flashcard Maker Works

  1. 1Type a front (question or term) and back (answer or definition) for each card and click Add.
  2. 2Once you have at least 2 cards, click Study or Shuffle & Study to enter study mode.
  3. 3Tap or click the card to flip it and reveal the answer.
  4. 4Click Mark Known for cards you have learned. Navigate with the arrow buttons to review the full deck.

Why Flashcards Work

Active recall — retrieving information from memory rather than re-reading it — is one of the most evidence-backed study techniques. Flashcards force you to produce the answer before flipping, engaging retrieval rather than passive recognition. Combine with spaced repetition (reviewing cards at increasing intervals) for maximum long-term retention.

Tips for Effective Flashcard Study

Keep cards atomic

One concept per card. If a card requires a long answer to be correct, split it into two or more cards. Shorter, cleaner answers are easier to retrieve under test conditions.

Shuffle regularly

Studying cards in the same order creates a false sense of familiarity. Shuffling forces your brain to retrieve each answer independently, strengthening genuine memory.

Say the answer aloud

Verbalising your answer before flipping adds a layer of active recall and helps identify gaps in understanding more honestly than passively recognising the answer.

Create cards while studying, not after

The act of deciding what belongs on each card is itself a form of active processing. Making cards as you study the material builds deeper understanding than reviewing later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my flashcards saved when I close the tab?

Yes. Your flashcard deck is automatically saved to your browser's localStorage, so it persists between sessions on the same device and browser.

How many cards can I add?

There is no hard limit. The tool stores cards in localStorage, which typically allows several megabytes of data — enough for thousands of cards.

Can I shuffle the deck?

Yes. Click "Shuffle & Study" to randomise card order for each study session. This helps prevent rote ordering and improves long-term recall.

What does "Mark Known" do?

"Mark Known" flags a card as learned during a study session. When all cards are marked known, the session ends with a summary. Marks reset when you restart the session.

Can I export my flashcards?

Currently the tool saves to localStorage only. Copy your cards manually if you need a backup, or plan to transfer them to another device.

What is the best way to use flashcards for studying?

Review a deck once, then sort cards into "know it" and "don't know it" piles. Focus your next session on the "don't know" pile. Spaced repetition — reviewing at increasing intervals — produces the best long-term retention.
