Understanding Readability Scores
Both Flesch formulas use two inputs: average words per sentence (sentence length) and average syllables per word (word complexity). To lower your grade level, write shorter sentences and choose simpler words. Academic writing tends to score grade 14–18 — professional writing targets 8–12. Neither score is a quality judgment; they measure comprehension difficulty for a given reader population.
Tips for Better Essay Writing
Vary sentence length
Mix short, punchy sentences with longer analytical ones. Uniform sentence length feels monotonous. The reading ease score will improve when long, complex sentences are broken up.
Check the word minimum
Most essay prompts specify a word count. The tool shows live word count so you can see exactly how far you are from the requirement without counting manually.
Use top keywords strategically
If your key argument is not among the top 5 keywords, you may be burying your thesis. The keyword count helps confirm your main topic is the dominant theme.
Match grade level to your audience
A scholarship essay reviewed by a committee benefits from a grade 10–12 score — clear and precise. A research paper targeting peer reviewers can score grade 14–16.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level?
The Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level estimates the US school grade needed to understand the text. A score of 8 means an 8th-grader can read it. It is calculated from average sentence length and average syllables per word.
What is Flesch Reading Ease?
Flesch Reading Ease scores from 0 to 100. Higher is easier: 90+ is very easy (children's books), 60–70 is standard (magazines), below 30 is very difficult (academic journals). The score uses the same inputs as the grade level formula.
What grade level should my essay be?
For a general audience: aim for grade 8–10 (Reading Ease 60–70). For academic writing: grade 12–16 is typical. For college admissions essays: aim for grade 10–12 — clear and articulate but not overly complex.
Is my text stored or sent anywhere?
No. All analysis runs in your browser using JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time uses 200 words per minute, which is the average adult silent reading speed. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, appropriate for a presentation delivery pace.
What are the top keywords?
The tool counts word frequency, filtering out common stop words (the, a, and, etc.) and words under 3 characters. The top 5 remaining words by frequency are shown as your main keywords.
