What Is HEIC and Why Can't Windows Open It?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format Apple adopted in iOS 11 (2017). It uses the HEVC (H.265) video codec to compress still images, achieving roughly half the file size of JPEG at the same visible quality. A typical 12-megapixel iPhone photo that would be 4–6 MB as a JPEG is only 2–3 MB as HEIC.
The tradeoff is compatibility. HEIC relies on the HEVC codec, which is patented and requires a licensing fee. Windows 10 and 11 can open HEIC files only after purchasing the “HEVC Video Extensions” from the Microsoft Store ($0.99). Android devices, most web browsers, and many image editing applications cannot open HEIC files at all without additional software. JPEG, by contrast, is universally supported across every platform and device made in the past 30 years.
HEIC vs JPG: File Size Comparison
| Format | Typical size (12 MP photo) | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|
| HEIC | 2–3 MB | Apple devices only (natively) |
| JPG at 92% quality | 3–5 MB | Universal — all devices and platforms |
| JPG at 80% quality | 1.5–2.5 MB | Universal — slightly reduced quality |
JPG Quality Guide
The quality slider controls how much JPEG compression is applied to the output:
- 92–100% — near-lossless quality, indistinguishable from the HEIC original for most uses. Use for printing or archival.
- 80–90% — excellent quality, smaller file size. Suitable for sharing, email, and most digital uses.
- 60–79% — visible compression artefacts in smooth areas (skies, skin tones). Use only when file size is critical.
How to Stop iPhone Saving as HEIC
If you want your iPhone to save photos as JPG going forward, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select Most Compatible. This tells the camera to use JPEG instead of HEIC. Photos taken before this change remain as HEIC and need to be converted separately.
Alternatively, when you AirDrop photos from iPhone to a Mac, iOS automatically converts them to JPEG. This tool is most useful when transferring photos to Windows via USB, sharing via email or messaging apps that don't auto-convert, or batch-converting an existing photo library.
